CHAPTER 13

While they drove east, they went over what they knew. Kirby and now Bayly were somehow involved with the death of Rebecca Carlson; Armour’s feelings were very strong on that. Melanie did not question it, though she did demand some further proof. That was fair enough, Armour thought. He just hoped he could provide it.

“Bayly’s writing – we should try and get a sample of it,” Melanie said.

“How do you propose we do that?”

“We have to think outside the box. If there are any living relatives, maybe they have a scrapbook or a stack of letters he wrote. We could take it to an expert. That, in my mind, would settle it.”

“I’m not sure it would for me. Every time I’ve gone through this sort of thing before, there has been some definite closure at the end.” Armour thought about his experience with the Evelyn Krantz case and shuddered at how that had come out. “I don’t think comparing writing samples would do it. Plus, Bayly didn’t sign his name on that note, and it is incomplete.”

“Maybe something happened to him while he was writing it. Like I said, he may have been under duress. We have to find out more about Bayly, what he was doing around the time of the murder. We know he worked as a flyer for the Games. Maybe he knew Rebecca before that event? What are we headed down here for anyway?”

“Not sure. Just something I saw; it intrigued me.”

When they got to the Eastgate Mall, Melanie let out a sigh of disappointment. The camera crew was gone. Armour, on the other hand, was relieved. He also felt guilty about running away from the movie people and leaving all that money behind.

They pulled into the parking lot. Melanie parked in the same spot where Armour had put his car the day before. The area where the trailers and catering tents had been set up was now filled with ordinary cars. Life had returned to normal.

“We filmed over there,” he said, pointing.

“What do you mean we?” Melanie said.

“They hired my car for a shot.”

“Really? Why didn’t you say anything?”

“Guess I forgot.”

“How much did they pay?”

“It was a thousand for the car…”

“And?”

“They were going to give me three hundred as an extra.”

“Wait a minute – you were in the movie?”

“It was a period piece, nineteen-twenties. I guess I looked the part.”

“I’ll say. So, go on.”

“We waited over here. There were tents set up for the extras. And catering. A mountain of food. You would have loved it,” he said. Melanie playfully jabbed her elbow into his side. “We waited and waited. It was boring.”

They got out of the car and walked to the side street where the vintage prewar homes were. Life had returned to normal indeed. There was a string of modern cars parked in front of the houses, and a brown UPS van was making a delivery. The illusion from the previous day was shattered.

“I stood right here, then I walked in that direction.
